Newswise — AUSTIN, Texas — The McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin has maintained its business and accounting accreditation by AACSB International — the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB is a global, nonprofit membership organization of educational institutions, businesses, and other entities devoted to the advancement of business education. The University of Texas at Austin was among the first group of 16 business schools invited to become members of the association in 1916.

AACSB accreditation is the hallmark of excellence in business education, and has been earned by less than five percent of business programs globally. Today 761 business schools in 52 countries and territories maintain AACSB accreditation. An additional specialized AACSB accreditation is maintained by 183 of these institutions for their accounting programs.

To maintain accreditation a business school must undergo a rigorous review every five years. The school must demonstrate its commitment to 15 quality standards relating to strategic management and innovation, faculty and professional staff quality and qualification, student learning and engagement, as well as a commitment to continuous improvement and achievement of learning goals in degree programs.

“It takes a great deal of commitment and determination to earn and maintain AACSB accreditation,” said Robert D. Reid, executive vice president and chief accreditation officer of AACSB International. “Business schools must not only meet specific standards of excellence, but their deans, faculty, and professional staff must make a commitment to ongoing continuous improvement to ensure that the institution will continue to deliver the highest quality of education to students.”

The McCombs School is one of the largest and most prestigious schools of business in the world. Enrollment in Fall 2015 included 4,638 undergraduates; 1,201 MBA students; 295 Master’s in Public Accounting students; 189 other master’s degree students; and 103 Ph.D. candidates. Additionally the school enrolls 6,200 other university students in Business Foundations courses each year. McCombs faculty members are ranked the fifth most influential researchers at global schools of business. The school has more than 93,000 living alumni across 50 states, D.C., four territories and 107 countries.

“Our promise to students, faculty, and alumni is to provide an educational experience of the first class, as befits the vision of The University of Texas at Austin,” said Jay Hartzell, dean of the McCombs School and the Trammel Crow Regents’ Professor in Business. “As we prepare to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the university’s first business graduates, this accreditation confirms our commitment to invest in the programs and personnel necessary for constant innovation and improvement.”
