GI EXPERTS PRESENT NEW RESEARCH ON NSAID-INDUCED ULCERS

Breakthrough Medications Alleviate Worry of GI Bleeding in Patients with Chronic Pain

WHO: American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) is an association of over 7,000 gastrointestinal professionals committed to the scientific study and medical treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.

WHAT: About 20 million Americans will suffer from an ulcer once in their lifetime. Although once thought to be caused by stress, doctors now know that there are two major causes of ulcers. Scientists have made great strides in combating the leading cause, the H. pylori bacterium. Now they are tackling the second leading cause of ulcers, regular use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including common pain relievers like aspirin and ibuprofen as well as many prescription pain medications. Gastrointestinal experts will discuss the latest research on treatment -- and new research on prevention:
-- New treatment guidelines for preventing and treating NSAID-induced ulcers
-- Breakthrough medicines: COX-2 inhibitors, new NSAIDs that are reported to be less irritating to the stomach and intended for those whose medical condition, e.g. arthritis, may require regular pain relievers.

EXPERTS:
-- Harris R. Clearfield, MD, FACG, Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, Hahnemann, Philadelphia, PA

-- Frank L. Lanza, MD, FACG, Houston, TX

-- Walter L. Peterson, MD, FACG, VA Medical Center, Dallas, TX
