MEDIA AVAILABILITY WITH FRANCIS NARIN TO REVEAL MORE ABOUT INDUSTRY'S RELIANCE ON PUBLIC SCIENCE

Francis Narin, Ph.D., -- whose survey, The Increasing Linkage Between U.S. Technology and Public Science, was highlighted last year by the national media -- will be at the National Science Foundation (NSF) on January 22 to meet with reporters on extensions of his findings.

Narin, an international authority on bibliometric analysis (the study of scientific publications and their citations by researchers), will speak afterward at a luncheon meeting of the Association for Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) to be held at the Channel Inn, 650 Water Street, SW in Washington D.C. This event is also open to the public.

The focus of Narin's speech, which he will outline during his media availability at NSF, will be on the continued increase and broadening of linkages between U.S. patents and their research citings from 1994 through 1997. He will also discuss aspects of the Japanese research system, including some surprising findings about the integration of academic and industry science that more closely rival the U.S. than originally expected. Diana Hicks, an expert on Japan's research system, will also be available to answer questions.
