Newswise — Two members from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) earned a bronze Telly award for their work on a Patient/Family Centered Care Video Project: More than Just Caring, during the 27th Annual Telly Awards.

Galen Barbour, M.D., professor and director of USU's Health Services Administration Division, Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics and John Guevara, program manager, Health Services Administration Division Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics, wrote and produced the twenty minute video intended to educate military health care professionals in the tools and methods needed to continuously improve high-quality health care systems.

The video shows the military training facility (MTF) organization and support of family centered care programs at all levels of command and support staff while providing examples of how the family centered care programs function. It also shows candid comments from hospital personnel on implementing family centered care programs and conversations with command officers on the overall importance of family centered care programs in the Military Health System.

The video helps senior leaders see the importance of family centered care program to produce high quality outcomes, high patient satisfaction, provider satisfaction and MTF cost effectiveness.

Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards are the premier awards honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions.

USU is the nation's federal school of medicine and graduate school of nursing. The students are active-duty uniformed officers in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Public Health Service who are being educated to deal with wartime casualties, national disasters, emerging infectious diseases and other public health emergencies. Many of the university's graduates are currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.
