Millennium Fear ñ 1000 A.D.

Fear for mankindís fate at the turn of a new millennium is nothing new, but its cause has changed. Today we fear a technological breakdown, 1,000 years ago Europeans feared the wrath of God, says Flowers Braswell, Ph.D., UAB professor of arts and humanities. ìOne thousand A.D., was a dark time when prophets made apocalyptic predictions of doom and damnation and the end of the world.î In the years that followed, there was much upheaval in Europe, including the 100 Years War and the Black Plague, which many considered a sign of Godís wrath. A reinterpretation of the Bible sent many into apocalyptic fear when the ìendî was rescheduled for 1500. ìReligious pilgrimages intensified. Christians were constantly told to prepare for the end of the world.î
