Newswise — The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) a $60,000 grant for its online Education Community of Learning at www.materialstechnology.org. The funds will be used over the next two years to further enhance the site to aid educators and students in materials science and engineering programs.

The online Education Community at Materials Technology@TMS currently provides resources to assist in instruction and the development of best practices across education departments and universities, such as course notes and exercises, tutorials, videos, visuals and books. The grant will enable TMS to obtain additional resources of value to support those in the materials education field in teaching undergraduate and graduate students. Educators will be able to utilize an expanded arsenal of documented and peer-reviewed resources to supplement lectures and demonstrations.

The Education Community is one of six online Communities of Learning that provides digital resources, discussion boards, articles, news, and publications and conference information in a specific technical field. Other communities include: integrated computational materials engineering; lead-free solders; magnesium; materials for nuclear power; and superalloys. Each technical community is guided by an advisory group comprised of experts in their field, representing industry, academia and government.

TMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials science and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators and administrators from more than 70 countries on six continents.
