Heat treating: The original edition of Practical Heat Treating was compiled by Howard Boyer, former ASM Metals Handbook editor. The 300-page second edition has been revised and updated by Jon Dossett, who has more than four decades of experience in heat treating operations and management.
"Since many of the fundamentals [of heat treating] have not changed in the past 30 years," says Dossett, "in this updated edition, we concentrated on adding information about the new processes and process control techniques that have been developed or refined during the intervening period." In addition, helpful appendices have been added on decarburization of steels, boost/diffuse cycles for carburizing, and process verification.
Jon Dossett, an ASM Fellow, served as editor of ASM's Journal of Heat Treating and currently chairs the Heat Treating Progress Editorial Committee.
