American Chemical Society names Jerald L. Schnoor as new editor of environmental engineering and sciences journal

Jerald L. Schnoor, who holds the Allen S. Henry Chair of Engineering at the University of Iowa, has been named editor of Environmental Science and Technology, a peer-reviewed publication of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.

Schnoor, who joined UI's College of Engineering in 1977, co-directs the university's Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research and holds a secondary appointment in the College of Public Health. Schnoor received his B.S. in chemical engineering at Iowa State University in 1972, an M.S. in environmental health engineering in 1974, and a Ph.D. in civil (environmental) engineering in 1975 from the University of Texas.

"I am excited. ES&T is by far the top journal in the world on environmental science and engineering," said Schnoor. "Its impact ratings are more than twice its closest competitors -- it is read both by leading scientists and engineers, as well as CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. It has a special nature as both a magazine and technical journal rolled into one publication." ES&T is the most cited journal of its kind and a leader in the research and business and industry communities.

From 1991-2000 Schnoor was an associate editor for ES&T. His special fields of interest include water quality modeling, aquatic chemistry and biogeochemistry. He will succeed the current ES&T editor, William Glaze, who is a professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Schnoor begins his new duties January 1, 2003, and hopes to expand ES&T's coverage, particularly in fields where environmental science and technology intersect with the biological revolution.
