Newswise — As the newest NASS president, Dr. Guyer will lead the world's largest and most respected medical society focusing on improving spine care for patients. In his new role, Guyer's main charge is to ensure NASS serves its 4,400 members and stays focused on the organization's primary goals:

"¢ Promoting and supporting spine research

"¢ Providing credible spine care information to the public, health care professionals, government, industry and the media

"¢ Maintaining a responsive infrastructure and striving for balanced growth

"Dr. Guyer has been an active NASS member since its inception in 1985 leading various initiatives and providing great insight and counsel about the latest issues in spine health and patient care," said Eric Muehlbauer, NASS executive director. "On behalf of our entire staff and Board of Directors, I'm pleased to see him leading our organization's efforts in the coming year."

As part of his responsibilities, Dr. Guyer will serve as chairman of the NASS Board of Directors setting meeting agendas, supervising discussions/presentations and presiding over the voting on all motions and actions for the Board, Executive Committee and the organization's membership.

"As I take on this new leadership role, I'm committed to collaborating with other medical societies on particular issues such as addressing the MCAC Panel on Fusions, advocacy, research and education," said Dr. Guyer. "I am also very interested in determining new ways to enable our members to collect data on their outcomes so they may benchmark and improve their quality of care which will have far reaching implications as we move forward."

With the opening of the NASS Spine Masters Institute, a cutting edge, hands-on educational facility and corresponding Spine Campus slated to open in 2007, Dr. Guyer also plans to reach out to and provide an opportunity for other spine specialty societies to work with NASS and possibly share administrative resources.

"It is my hope to improve our members' understanding and knowledge of evidence-based medicine," explained Dr. Guyer. "The ultimate goal is to determine how to use evidence-based medicine to improve patient care, ensure better reimbursement and generally help improve our ability to care for patients."

Dr. Guyer is a Co-Founder and President of the Texas Back Institute and Fellowship Director at the Texas Back Institute. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine. He holds the medical appointment of Chairman of the Blood Conservation Committee at the Presbyterian Hospital of Plano and is Chairman of the Board of the Texas Back Institute Research Foundation. Additionally, Dr. Guyer is on staff at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, Plano Presbyterian Center for Diagnostics and Surgery, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and Baylor Frisco Medical Center. Dr. Guyer earned a Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His Internship was at Parkland Memorial Hospital, followed by a Residency program in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Guyer participated in two Spine Fellowships, one at Case Western Reserve University and the second in Long Beach, California.
