Though tax season just passed, it's not too early to begin thinking about filing next year's taxes. UAB accounting professor Frank Messina, D.B.A., says there are several steps taxpayers can take now that will help them April 15.

"Check your income and see if it is where you thought it would be and then check your withholdings to make sure enough tax is being cut. Filing status is determined Dec. 31, so if you are getting married -- or divorced -- consider now what that will do to your filing status and income. And don't wait until the end of the year to make charitable contributions. Take what you would have sold at your yard sale and donate it to your favorite charity.
