NUCLEAR POWER, COASTAL WATER QUALITY ISSUES HIGHLIGHT AAAS PACIFIC DIVISION MEETING AT UC IRVINE
EVENT:The American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pacific Division's 82nd Annual Meeting

BACKGROUND:The Pacific Division of the AAAS, the United States' largest scientific organization, will hold its annual meeting on the UC Irvine campus. Its 16 symposia and 15 topical lectures will feature 80 leading Western scientists, with topics ranging from the biological and physical sciences to engineering, education and social ecology.
Symposia highlights include:
--Building 50 nuclear power plants a year to help supply the world's power needs by 2020
--Frontiers in the science and management of coastal water quality
--Creating a sustainable environment in the Pacific region
--Informatics and the new biology
--New perspectives on twins, virtual twins and siblings
--Topical lecture highlights include:
--How primate studies shed light on the human condition
--Evolution and religion-conflict or concert?
--Advanced developments in security technology
--Future mass transportation technology and innovation
--The hidden dangers of the U.S. electoral process
In addition, UCI Chancellor Ralph J. Cicerone will give a plenary lecture on "Global Climate Change and U.S. Policy." Cicerone, a leading researcher in the fields of chemistry and Earth system science, is recognized as one of the world's leading experts on global warming and the greenhouse effect.
