Healthcare delivery, the biomedical knowledge base, and understanding of the biopsychosocial influences on wellness and disease are in a state of constant change unprecedented in history. Consequently, health professional education is changing in response to emerging population needs and expectations. That change produces challenges. Join Dr. Barbara Ross-Lee, dean of New York Institute of Technology's New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and the first woman to head the second-largest medical college in the country, at the Academic Health Summit--organized to present the challenges, and opportunities, that arise in the academic health centers where the health professional workforce of the future is trained.

NYCOM is the only osteopathic medical school in the state of New York. The school, a part of the New York Institute of Technology, an independent, comprehensive college that offers, through eight schools, more than 100 courses of study leading to undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. NYIT currently educates more than 11,000 students on three physical campuses--in Old Westbury and Central Islip, Long Island, and Manhattan, near Lincoln Center--and one virtual campus via the Internet. More than 59,000 alumni have received degrees from NYIT, including some 3,000 medical graduates from NYCOM, the second largest medical school in the United States and the largest one in New York State.

PURPOSE: The summit is in recognition of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine's 25th anniversary celebration. National experts will provide participants with a view of pending and future health and medical issues as a basis for collaborative strategic planning among all disciplines of the health professional programs at NYIT.

TARGET AUDIENCE: The audience will be comprised of medical and health professionals, ranging from faculty and staff, alumni, clinical adjunct faculty, educational leaders from affiliate institutions and community organizations.

TOPICS: Sessions will explore challenges and opportunities in healthcare, which impact service, research and teaching. The topics to be explored include the medical and interdisciplinary workforce, universal access, bioterrorism, diversity/cultural competency, examples of population-based research, and the evolving role of technology in health professional education and clinical service.
