Newswise — NYU Langone Medical Center announced today it achieved Silver status in the New York City Department of Health’s Healthy Hospital Food Initiative. The initiative aims to create a healthier food environment in New York City hospitals and offers employees, visitors and patients better access to healthy food by improving the nutritional content of food and beverage options available in cafeterias, vending machines and patient meals.

Seventeen private hospitals have committed to participation, building off of the successful changes implemented by the NYC Health and Hospital Corporation’s 11 acute care hospitals. These commitments will impact over 150,000 hospital employees and millions of hospital patients and visitors annually. “We are thrilled to achieve Silver status in the New York City Department Health’s Healthy Hospital Food initiative,” said Amy Horrocks, vice president for medical services at NYU Langone Medical Center “We recognize the integral role healthy eating plays in both wellness and the healing process and we have worked to enhance the taste of our patient meals while improving the nutritional content. Our commitment to offering healthy food is synonymous with our vision to ensure world-class patient-centered care.” In 2008 Mayor Michael Bloomberg established food standards consistent with the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Institute of Medicine guidelines for a healthy diet to make healthy foods easily available. These standards decrease the offerings of high-calorie beverages and make healthier options more prominent. The initiative launched with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services. Funding is administered by the Fund for Public Health in New York, a private non-profit organization that supports innovative initiatives of the New York City Health Department.
