Newswise — Daniel F. Roses, MD, the Jules Leonard Whitehill Professor of Surgery and Oncology and chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at NYU Langone Medical Center was awarded the Tower of Hope Dr. Daniel G. Miller Excellence in Medicine Award by the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) this month.
Dr. Roses was honored by the ICRF at its Tower of Hope Gala on March 10th for his long commitment to cancer research and cancer treatment. Dr. Roses’ research focuses on the surgical and systemic treatment of melanoma, breast cancer, soft tissue sarcoma and thyroid and parathyroid disease.
The ICRF is the single largest source of private funds for cutting-edge biotechnology and medical technology cancer research in Israel. Since its establishment in 1975, it has provided more than 1794 grants to outstanding scientists who work at all of the leading research institutions in Israel.
Dr. Roses is a professor in the Department of Surgery and director of the Breast Cancer Discovery Fund and The Cancer Surgery Research Fund at NYU School of Medicine. He is principal investigator of the National Cancer Institute Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial - the first clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of sentinel lymphadenectomy, a standard in the care of malignant melanoma and breast cancer. He is also a co-investigator of NYU’s Jewish Women Breast and Ovarian Cancer Genetics study.
As author of more than 240 published manuscripts and three textbooks, Dr. Roses is the recipient of three of NYU’s School of Medicine’s highest honors: The Solomon A. Berson Alumni Achievement Award in Clinical Science, the Great Teacher Award of New York University and a five time recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award of NYU School of Medicine. He has also received the Albert Gallatin Alumni Award, the Gender Equity Award of the American Medical Women’s Association, the Manhattan Breast Cancer Awareness Award and the Physician of the Year Award of the Rambam Medical Center in Israel.
Dr. Roses is a member of several societies including the American Surgical Association, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of University of Surgeons and Alpha Omega Alpha. He has previously served as New York State Chairman for the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons and as President of the New York Surgical Society.
