NYU Medical Center Opens the First Tuberous Sclerosis Center in the Tri-state Area

NYU Medical Center is pleased to announce the opening on May 7th of the NYU Tuberous Sclerosis (TS) Center, the only designated center of its kind in the tri-state area. May is Tuberous Sclerosis Awareness Month. Tuberous Sclerosis is a genetic disease estimated to affect over 50,000 Americans and 1 million individuals worldwide. The disease affects multiple organs and causes tumors in the brain, skin, kidneys, heart, eyes, lungs, oral cavity, and other organ systems.

"Tuberous sclerosis affects individuals in many ways and can challenge any physician. The goal of our center is to provide comprehensive and coordinated care for individuals with a disorder that affects many organs, but most critically, the brain," states Orrin Devinsky, MD, Co-Director of the TS Center and Director of the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.

Devoted to providing multidisciplinary and coordinated care for individuals with Tuberous Sclerosis, the TS Center will work closely and collaboratively with the pediatrician, family practitioner, neurologist, or internist, partnering with them to provide the best possible care. Other specialists, including developmental pediatricians, dermatologists, neurosurgeons, nephrologists, cardiologists, psychologists, pulmonologists, and nurses will also be involved the treatment plan.

Daniel Miles, MD, Co-Director, says "Patients gain from well orchestrated care provided by the multiple specialists of a unified team whose focus is the whole patient, not just a particular organ system." Dr. Miles is a pediatric neurologist with expertise in the treatment of epilepsy and development disorders.

The TS Center is located within the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (CEC) at 403 East 34th Street. For more information, contact Lourdes Gonzalez at (212) 263-8358.
