Spoofs on bad behavior at holiday office parties may be humorous, but in real life, saying or doing the wrong thing can lead to big trouble for your career, says Lynne Richardson, Ph.D., UAB associate business dean. Richardson has taught etiquette to undergraduate and graduate students through her sales technique and professional development classes.

"Technically, office parties are supposed to be a time to relax with co-workers and superiors. But just like all other times with your superiors, you're under a microscope if the superior chooses to put you there." Avoid discussing religion or politics. Don't press the boss about raises, salaries or Christmas bonuses. Bring a date only if you have been told that it's appropriate. "Eat before the party because alcohol on an empty stomach can make you tipsy. Limit your drinking."
