Newswise — San Francisco, CA – January 18, 2012 – The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) announces that its website OpenAnesthesia (www.openanesthesia.org) has received more than two million page views since its launch in July 2009. Edward C. Nemergut, MD, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Neurological Surgery at the University of Virginia, started the website as an online multimodal toolkit specifically designed to advance graduate medical education in anesthesia. The site has grown to include various learning tools, such as podcasts, videos, and several features that help residents prepare for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) exams.

Dr. Nemergut, Editor-in-Chief of OpenAnesthesia, also serves as the Program Director of Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Virginia. He is the co-creator of OpenAnesthesia, along with Robert Thiele, MD, of Duke University. OpenAnesthesia allows users to author and edit medical content related to anesthesiology. The educational platform creates a unique opportunity for resident physicians to take an active role in their own education, serving as the website’s primary contributors.

“It took more than eight months for OpenAnesthesia to get its first 200,000 page views back in March 2010. It took a little more than a year to cross the one million mark in April 2011 and now, quite impressively, we cross the two million mark less than 9 months later [in January 2012]. I am encouraged that this kind of traffic indicates that we can continue to grow and improve the education of anesthesiologists around the globe,” said Dr. Nemergut. “With traffic like this, I couldn’t be more optimistic about our future.”

Today, OpenAnesthesia is an established educational platform with more than 18,000 unique visitors per month. The site has an Editorial Board, consisting of 10 experts in the field of anesthesiology.
