Parents who come into parent-teacher conferences with a sense of partnership will most likely have a better conference outcome, says UAB assistant professor of education Lois Christensen, Ph.D.

"Viable questions to ask a teacher in a conference reside around how the child is working in class. Are they on grade level or not? What does the teacher see as the child's strengths, weaknesses and talents? Is homework being turned in and is class work completed on time? Does the child interact in class? Are outside activities promoting or interfering with the educational process? Ask about the curriculum, and don't hesitate to have the teacher define any words or acronyms you don't understand. And remember, listening is key to this partnership.".
