Patience Best Swimming Teacher

Even before summer rolls around, many parents will consider swimming lessons for their children. But when are children ready to learn to swim? Children as young as 6 months can begin swimming lessons, says Calvin Payne, a UAB Special Studies swim instructor for infants and young children. Seek out a certified instructor of youth swimming, or if the child is at least 6 months, a water babies class. An instructor will teach the child how to relax in the water, blow bubbles and eventually the fundamentals of swimming. But parents should be patient. "If a child doesn't want to get in the pool, don't force them. Patience is the key." UAB Special Studies is a continuing education program that offers non-credit, non-academic classes.
