Speculation is running high about who George W. Bush and Al Gore will choose as running mates. Some suggest Colin Powell as a possible choice for Bush. "Candidates typically want running mates who can balance the ticket," says UAB political scientist Steven Daniels, Ph.D. "President George Bush, for instance, represented the Republican Party's moderate wing while Dan Quayle represented the conservative wing. Candidates sometimes choose second-place finishers in the primaries. That's unlikely with Bush and McCain, but Bush must pull in McCain supporters. Powell would make an excellent running mate for Bush, but I suspect the effect would be small, not more than one or two percentage points."
