Newswise — Army Col. (Dr.) Naomi Aronson, a professor of medicine and alumna of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU), has been nominated as the Department of Defense agency representative to the Federal Tuberculosis Task Force (FTBTF).

Dr. Aronson is the director of the Infectious Diseases Division in USU's Department of Medicine. She was selected to be part of the task force by other TB authorities in the fields of public health, immunology, biotechnology, infectious diseases, pulmonary disease, pediatrics and microbiology. The task force is responsible for coordinating tuberculosis activities within the federal government.

As part of the task force, Dr. Aronson will provide advice and recommendations regarding the elimination of tuberculosis in the United States to the Secretary, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS); the Assistant Secretary for Health, DHHS; Office of Public Health and Science; and the Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

USU, located in Bethesda, Maryland, on the grounds of the National Naval Medical Center, educates health care professionals dedicated to career service in the Department of Defense and the United States Public Health Service. Students are active-duty uniformed officers in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Public Health Service who are being educated to deal with wartime casualties, disasters, emerging infectious diseases, and other public health emergencies. Of the university's more than 4,000 physician alumni, the vast majority serve on active duty and are supporting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, offering their leadership and expertise.
