Newswise — September is Prostate Cancer and Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, which makes it the perfect time to focus on the prevention and early detection of prostate and gynecologic cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 70,000 estimated new cases of gynecological (cervical, endometrial and ovarian) cancers are expected to occur in 2006. For prostate cancer, more than 200,000 estimated new cases are expected to occur in 2006.

"It is important to be aware of symptoms and listen to your body," stresses Therese Bevers, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

M. D. Anderson suggests the following important steps to help maintain gynecologic and prostate health: "¢ Follow recommended screening guidelines "¢ Know personal risk factors for gynecologic and prostate cancers"¢ Discuss persistent symptoms with a physician"¢ Pay attention to your body

Remember, detecting cancer early can greatly increase your chances of successful treatment, says Bevers. Speak with your physician about the benefits and limitations of cancer screening so you can make an informed decision about testing.
