In the face of increasing hacker attacks, at-risk personal computer users -- this means you -- do have a few options, says a UAB computer engineer.

"The only really good way to protect yourself is to disconnect your computer from the Internet," said Stan McClellan, Ph.D. Short of that drastic move, computer users have to "be extremely careful with the access you allow other people to have." For instance, don't allow "shared resources," which if you are a Windows user allows several possible security breaches.

And make sure to stay up-to-date on all security-related patches for your operating system and other software like your Web browser. With the Web filled with resources to make hacking easier and easier, anyone using a PC on the Internet needs to take precautions.
