Public Expects More Terrorist Acts

A survey of 401 Birmingham-area residents shows that 51 percent believe another terrorist act will occur in the United States within the year. Nearly 40 percent say they've experienced more fear and anxiety since watching the attacks on television and nearly 60 percent believe there's nothing they can do to avoid becoming a victim of terrorism. "There's an element of fear that's still out there," says UAB communication studies expert Larry Powell, Ph.D., who conducted the survey. About a quarter of those surveyed said they even altered their activities following the attacks. "The poll's results are probably what one would find around the rest of the nation, with the exception of New York, which may be more intense."
