REAL-TIME SCIENCE AVAILABLE ONLINE

Launch of 26 Electronic Journals Creates The Most Comprehensive Source of Chemistry-Related Research Available With Flexible Pricing Structure

Washington, D.C. -- A vast range of scientific research results will be available faster than ever before when - for the first time - the world's largest scientific society makes its entire collection of 26 prestigious research journals available via the Internet next month. The American Chemical Society, the leading scientific society for chemists and chemical engineers, will unveil the new electronic versions of its journals before the 8,000 scientists expected at the Society's national meeting in Las Vegas in early September.

One such new feature titled "Articles ASAP" (As Soon As Publishable) represents a major advance in scholarly publishing that will allow scientists, research institutions, governments, industry and the public access to "real-time science," by dramatically reducing the time it takes to publish verified findings. Beginning in January 1998, the Society will post journal articles on the Web as soon as they have been peer reviewed, copy edited, and checked by author for accuracy. That will allow subscribers to see "published" articles several weeks before they appear in the pages of a printed journal.

"By providing real-time science through our electronic journals, we're speeding the use of scientific advances around the world," said Robert D. Bovenschulte, who directs publishing for the Society. "Web access allows us to deliver new findings in chemistry as much as 75% faster than before, and with the features and conveniences that best meet the needs of individual as well as institutional subscribers."

The electronic editions of the journals -- on topics ranging from biochemistry to environmental science -- contain new features not available in the print journals, including;

Two separate formats to view articles, interactive text (HTML) and complete page image (PDF). Users can search and print articles from the entire database starting from 1996 - forward.

State-of-the-art graphics, diagrams and interactive video features allow users to view and manipulate three-dimensional models of molecular structures and other visual models.

Flexible pricing options which allow subscribers to purchase individual journals or any combination of journals -- with the eventual ability to purchase individual articles.

Interactive links to other recognized databases. These include Medline, the Protein Database, GenBank, and eventually to ChemPort (a hot link to the CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS file), and others.

The American Chemical Society, a publisher of scientific journals since 1879, published over 18,000 individual research articles from scientists in the U.S. and around the world in its journals last year.

Now available for the first time are electronic versions of the following 20 publications (including four journals which are published in conjunction with other scientific societies);

Accounts of Chemical Research
