the recent UN report.

Professor Chang's statement:

The United Nations Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change’s report this month suggesting that we are not likely to limit global warming by 1.5 degrees C – which will lead to more extreme and dangerous weather and other climate and ecosystem problems – has an upside. Despite this possibility, the report is evidence that we need to act to limit global warming as much as possible because the higher the average global temperature rises the more extreme climatic conditions become.

All of us can take immediate steps to reduce our carbon footprint, which will limit rising global temperatures. A major step as individuals and a society is to limit our fossil fuel use. This can  be done by driving more fuel efficient cars, having more efficient heating and cooling systems installed in our homes and places of business, and incorporating  higher efficiency electronic and electrical devices for work and home needs. Some broader actions to reduce fossil fuel emissions are to lobby legislators to call for much higher gasoline mileage targets for all vehicles and continue to support alternative energy projects at research institutions and within the business sector.
