Removing the Taboo of Death

"Death and dying have largely been taboo subjects in this country," says John L. Shuster, M.D., director of UAB's palliative medicine program. "We are only beginning to discuss end-of-life issues and search out means to make our final days more significant."

Focusing that search is a new UAB-sponsored program, Alabamians for Better Care at Life's End (ABCLE). ABCLE is a state-wide coalition of health-care professionals, educators and policymakers who will identify problems, make recommendations and build public support for ways to improve care of the dying -- particularly among underserved populations.
