WHAT

To draw attention to the screening and diagnosis of ovarian cancer, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) will host an educational session at its annual meeting titled “Ovarian Carcinomas and Tumors of Low Malignant Potential: A Practical Review.” The session will provide an intensive review of ovarian carcinomas and tumors of low malignant potential to help pathologists deliver high-quality patient care. Experts will discuss current nomenclature, histologic classification, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, and clinicopathologic correlation.

Experts will also be available to discuss the diagnosis of breast cancer and pre-cancerous conditions.

WHY

Often called the “silent killer,” ovarian cancer is the ninth most common cancer among women. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 21,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2010, and more than 13,000 will die from the disease. Breast cancer continues to be a concern, as one in eight women living in the U.S. has a lifetime risk of being diagnosed with the disease.

WHO

The College of American Pathologists is a medical society serving more than 17,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. As diagnostic physicians, pathologists play a key role in diagnosing a number of diseases, including ovarian and breast cancers.

The following experts will be available to discuss ovarian and breast cancer pathology:

• Ovarian Cancer: Michael T. Deavers, MD, FCAP (Houston, Texas), of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

• Ovarian Cancer: Anais Malpica, MD, FCAP (Houston, Texas), of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

• Breast Cancer: Jean F. Simpson, MD, FCAP, (Nashville, Tenn.), of Vanderbilt University Medical Center

In addition, the following patients are available to share their personal stories about their battles with cancer.

• Cervical and Ovarian Cancer Survivor: Bernadette Stewart, 51-year old retiree from Chicago, who is a two time cancer survivor being diagnosed in 1987 and again in 2009

• Breast Cancer Survivor: Pamela Cramer, local Chicago breast cancer survivor

Interviews are available upon request.
