Rite Aid Donates Funds For Pharmacy Practice Lab

Rite Aid Corp. has donated $50,000 to the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy to partially fund renovations to its Pharmacy Practice Lab. The gift represents the first half of a two-year, $100,000 commitment to the School.

Dean David A. Knapp, PhD, says Rite Aid officials understand the need for a growing public-private partnership at the School. "We depend on the private sector to help us get the extra things, go the extra mile," said Knapp at a recent program honoring the firm. The practice lab, he said, is "where our students bridge the gap between classroom learning and the real world of community pharmacy."

The gift, presented by Michele A. Belsey, RPh, Rite Aid's director of college and professional recruitment, will go toward laboratory enhancements and improvements, including the purchase of some new, state-of-the-art equipment.

"We believe it is important that the faculty and students recognize Rite Aid's commitment to providing the funds to produce the quality of education that is needed to produce the kind of individual that we need to run our business," said Ken Simmons, Rite Aid's vice president of operations for the mid-Atlantic region. The Harrisburg-based pharmacy chain has 85 stores in the Baltimore metropolitan area.

John Hopple, Rite Aid's regional vice president, said the gift "sends a clear message to the School that we're willing to partner and help them grow in any direction in which they want to grow."

The School of Pharmacy, ranked seventh in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, prepares students to be patient-oriented health-care providers working as part of a multiprofessional team.
