ROSWELL PARK CANCER INSTITUTE APPOINTMENTS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

BUFFALO, NY -- Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) Corporation has announced two administrative appointments within the Division of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology/Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery.

Thom R. Loree, MD, has been appointed Chief of the Division and will continue to serve as Assistant Professor of Surgery, University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Loree joined the staff of RPCI in 1993 from St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York. He received his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. He completed internship and residency training in surgery and plastic surgery at St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital Center, and a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology & Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr. Loree is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, and is a member of many professional societies.

Dr. Loree's research interests include thyroid cancer, microsurgery and free tissue transfer.

Wesley L. Hicks, Jr., DDS, MD, FACS, has been appointed Director of the Fellowship Program in the Division. He will be responsible for the national accreditation and development of education and research programs at RPCI through the American Head and Neck Society. Dr. Hicks will continue to serve as Associate Professor, Department of Otolaryngology, University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Hicks joined the staff of RPCI in 1991 from the Stanford University Medical Center. He earned his doctorate in dental surgery from Meharry Medical College, Nashville, and his medical degree from the University at Buffalo. Dr. Hicks completed his otolaryngology head and neck surgery residency training at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital/New York Hospital, Cornell and completed his head and neck fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Hicks is board certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the National Board of Dental Examiners, and is specialty board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. He is a member of many professional societies including the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, and was the second African American to be inducted into the Triological Society in its 104 year history.

Dr. Hicks' research interests include in vitro growth of respiratory epithelium and bioengineered tracheal replacement devices.

"These appointments will enable the Division of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology/Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to continue providing innovative, high quality patient care, while providing leadership and training to those who will treat cancer in the future," according to Nicholas J. Petrelli, MD, chairman of the Department of Surgery.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute, founded in 1898, is the nation's first and one of its largest cancer research, treatment and education centers and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Western New York.
