Sales Trend Turns Sentimental

Sales and marketing of patriotic and anti-terrorism items have fallen from the peak that immediately followed Sept. 11. But because interest is still high, sales will continue to be strong for the foreseeable future, says UAB marketing professor Michael Bowers, Ph.D. "You are starting to see more interest in products that touch sentiments of family and items that remind us of Americana. I expect sales of patriotic items for the Fourth of July next year will be huge, as they will on the first anniversary of Sept. 11." Bowers adds that sales of anti-terrorism products will continue to be event driven. For example, more anthrax letters, more anti-anthrax kits. "However, long-term trends suggest that sales of security items and systems in general are going to go up."
