Writing a thank-you note after a job interview is not only appropriate, it's a good way to set yourself apart from your competition, says UAB marketing professor Lynne Richardson, Ph.D.

"The note doesn't have to be long. Thank them for their time, reiterate your interest in the job and indicate that you expect to hear from them by certain date -- whenever they told you in the interview you would hear from them."

Richardson adds that it also is acceptable in the note to respectfully tell them you're not interested in the job. "A handwritten note is preferred, unless you have hard-to-read handwriting. Send the note promptly, the day after the interview is best, and hand deliver it if they will be making a decision very quickly."
