Newswise — Nearly 1,000 international scientists, social scientists and risk analysis practitioners from a wide range of disciplines will gather in Baltimore, Maryland in early December at the annual meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) to present and evaluate new studies and scientific models that more accurately predict and evaluate the risks the public faces.

“This is the premier event of the year for risk analysis,” said Rick Reiss of the Exponent consultancy and President-Elect of the Society for Risk Analysis. “Prominent scientists and social scientists from around the world, including a Nobel laureate, will be on hand to discuss pressing risk issues of today and the future.”

Keynote speakers will include Professor Kenneth Arrow of Stanford University, a Nobel laureate in economics, who will address climate change and decision making in the face of uncertainty; Major General Bo Temple, Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (a federal agency that had a major role in flood control in New Orleans) who will speak on "The Challenges of Applying Risk Analysis to Decision Making in a Public Engineering Organization"; and Phillip Howard, a partner in the law firm Covington and Burling who will speak on “Life Without Lawyers”. Attorney Allan Kanner with the firm Kanner and Whiteley will respond to Howard’s presentation.

The 2009 annual meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) will be held at the Renaissance Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore. With members spanning academia, government, industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private firms, “SRA members recognize the value of diverse perspectives and a shared commitment to high quality risk analysis methodology and practice,” said current SRA President Alison Cullen of the University of Washington.

With the overall theme of Risk Analysis: The Evolution of a Science, nearly 100 plenary and technical sessions will be featured on diverse subjects including toxicology, food safety, the Listeria bacteria risk, the H1N1 virus, homeland security, terrorism assessments, climate change, biofuels, wind power, medical product safety, formaldehyde exposure, nanotechnology, emergency response, wildfires, import safety, transportation systems, natural disasters, the Chesapeake Bay, children’s health, and the Obama Administration’s approach to evaluating regulations.

The Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) is a nonprofit multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, scholarly, international society that provides an open forum for all those who are interested in risk analysis. Risk analysis is broadly defined to include risk assessment, risk characterization, risk communication, risk management, and policy relating to risk, in the context of risks of concern to individuals, to public and private sector organizations, and to society at a local, regional, national, or global level.
