The summer nesting season for sea turtles falls just as thousands of tourists flock to the beach for vacation. UAB biology professor and sea turtle expert Thane Wibbels, Ph.D., says tourists should stay away from these endangered creatures -- and don't upset their delicate nests. "It is illegal to disturb the nests. If you see a turtle nesting, stay away because you could scare it back into the water. The best thing to do is observe both from a distance." After 50 to 60 days, the hatchlings will emerge at night and crawl to the sea. Lighting near the beach can confuse hatchlings, and they can crawl in the wrong direction. "If you do happen upon disoriented hatchlings that are heading toward the dunes, contact local authorities."
