SINUS AND ALLERGY DISORDERS ARE EXAMINED AT THE COMBINED OTOLARYNGOLOGICAL SPRING MEETINGS

Ear, nose, and throat specialists offer medical research findings and
Rhinosinusitis Symposia at major medical meeting

An educational symposia and new medical and scientific research findings, all addressing the diagnosis and treatment of sinus and allergy disorders, will be presented at the 1997 Combined Otolaryngological Spring Meetings (COSM). COSM is a gathering of otolaryngologic societies which will be held May 10-16 at the Scottsdale Princess, Scottsdale, AZ. More than 1,500 ear, nose, throat, head and neck surgeons are expected to attend.

The medical societies participating in COSM are the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, American Broncho-Esophagological Association, American Laryngological Association, American Neurotology Society, American Otological Society, American Rhinologic Society, American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, and the Triological Society.

During the seven-day session, each medical society will meet to discuss issues associated with the specialty and hear medical research findings offered by the top ear, nose and throat specialists. Highlighting this year's meeting are several presentations offering new advances in the diagnosis and treatment of sinus disorders.

Key research presentations include:

Saturday, May 10

"Pediatric Allergy Update: Is it Possible to Prevent Allergy in Infancy?," presented by Robert Hamburger, MD. Sunday, May 11

"Quality of Life for Patients with Rhinosinusitis," presented by Michael Benninger, MD.

"Prevalence of Sinonasal Disease in Patients with HIV," presented by Jennifer P. Porter, MD.

Monday, May 12

"Laser Surgery for Allergic Rhinitis," presented by Tetsuzo Inoyue, MD.

In addition, the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy has scheduled a "Rhinosinusitis Symposia," to be held Sunday, May 11, at the Scottsdale Princess. This educational forum, supported by a grant from Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, will offer in-depth discussions of the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of sinus infections.

Both the symposia and scientific presentations will provide additional information to the American public regarding sinusitis. In the last six months, numerous publications, including the New York Times, Boston Globe, and Better Homes and Gardens, have all featured articles explaining how a severe cold or allergy might actually be a sinus infection.

Reporters interested in interviewing the presenters and/or obtaining additional information regarding the medical research should contact Ken Satterfield at (703) 519-1563 (prior to May 9); or at COSM (through May 15), phone (602) 585-4848 ex7538
