SPECIALIST IN TISSUE ENGINEERING TO ADDRESS NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING SESSION OCTOBER 8

Washington DC---One of the countryís leading specialists in the science of human tissue engineering, Dr. Gail Naughton, president and CEO, Advanced Tissue Sciences, Inc., will review recent developments in human tissue creation, including advances in skin replacement technology for burn victims and the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Dr. Naughton also will discuss future technologies in this area, such as the development of cartilage from single human cells and the creation of cardiovascular tissue and other internal organs.

Dr. Naughtonís presentation will be one of several at the annual National Academy of Engineering ës Symposium on Bioengineering meeting, to be held October 8 at the National Academy of Sciences Building here from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. An agenda is enclosed.

Advanced Tissue Sciences, Inc., of LaJolla, CA, specializes in the proprietary development of human-based tissue engineering techniques. Its current product on the market, Dermagraft TC, is used as a temporary skin replacement for burn victims. Another product, Dermagraft will provide a permanent graft for skin ulcers that do not heal, such as in the case of diabetics.

Other products in the pipeline include tissue engineered cartilage for orthopedic repair, facial reconstruction, correcting facial deformities. Other areas include injectable cartilage and cardiovascular tissue. (Injectable cartilage was used recently to form a human ear on a mouseís back.)

"The future holds endless possibilities for tissue engineering," Dr. Naughton said. "We have successfully grown not only cartilage, bone and skin but urinary tract and liver tissue. This is our future: to be able to have tissue engineering address the tremendous number of problems seen by patients who require transplants, who require replacements of skin, bone, and other tissues and organs. We hope very much to be part of the solution."
