Newswise — Moses Chao, PhD, Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology and Neuroscience at New York University School of Medicine is available to comment on the spinal cord research efforts of Christopher Reeve. He is currently the Chair of the New York State Spinal Cord Injury Board. He has worked closely with Mr. Reeve's paralysis foundation and sits on their Science Advisory Board.

Mr. Reeve and Dr. Chao were both present while Governor George Pataki signed a bill at NYU Medical Center establishing the Spinal Cord Injury Board of which they are both members. The board oversees the administration of grants for research in spinal cord injuries in New York State.

"Christopher Reeve was responsible for dramatically increasing the NIH budget over the last five years for neurological diseases. This not only included spinal cord injuries but it also extended to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease research," said Dr. Chao. "It's a shock to hear the news of his passing. He was a very active advocate for promoting spinal cord regeneration research as well as the spinal cord impaired community."
