Newswise — Following two years of preparation, Stony Brook University's Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) was awarded full accreditation status by the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP), at the September meeting of its Council on Accreditation, announced President Samuel L. Stanley, Jr., M.D. As the "gold seal," AAHRPP accreditation offers assurances – to research participants, researchers, sponsors, government regulators, and the general public – that Stony Brook's HRPP is focused first and foremost on excellence. "Stony Brook has always performed human research under OHRP-approved assurance of compliance with the HHS regulations," said Dr. Stanley. "With this significant accreditation, funding agencies that choose Stony Brook as a performance site know that the research will be conducted with the utmost attention to research integrity, quality and subject safety." AAHRPP is an independent, non-profit accrediting body that uses a voluntary, peer-driven, educational model to ensure that HRPPs meet rigorous standards for quality and protection. To earn accreditation, organizations must provide tangible evidence-through policies, procedures, and practices-of their commitment to scientifically and ethically sound research and to continuous improvement. Stony Brook University is now one of 220 human research protection programs worldwide to achieve this recognition. "Achieving this level of distinction from our peers in the field of human research protections is confirmation that Stony Brook knows what is ultimately important in the conduct of science," said Dr. John H. Marburger III, Vice President for Research. "This includes the safety of our subjects who entrust us with their health and welfare. With this validation, Stony Brook now confidently moves forward to continue its contributions in the social behavioral and biomedical sciences, with particular concentration on clinical and translational advancements for our community." "AAHRPP accreditation is a testament to the perseverance of all at Stony Brook who support the Human Research Protection Program," said Kenneth Kaushansky, Sr. Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine. "This includes our investigators, administrators, and members of the Institutional Review Boards, all of whom are dedicated to the mission that clinical research at this institution is conducted ethically and in a legally compliant manner." "Achieving this recognition validates my long-standing confidence in our program," said Judy Matuk, M.S., Assistant Vice President for Research Compliance, who spearheaded the accreditation process. "As signatory on the assurance document that promises compliance with myriad regulatory requirements, and our intent to hold subject safety paramount during the ethical conduct of research to our federal oversight agency, I am very pleased with this accreditation because it acknowledges that not only are we keeping that promise, but we are doing so with uncompromisingly high standards."
