Stony Brook the Only NY Hospital in the 2011 Top 20 List by Soliant Health

Newswise — STONY BROOK, N.Y., July 12, 2011 – Stony Brook University Hospital was named as one of America’s Most Beautiful Hospitals, ranking third in a list of 50 healthcare facilities around the country. Soliant Health, a leading specialty healthcare provider, released the results this month of the 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals 2011, a contest developed by Soliant Health.

According to Soliant Health, the contest, in its third year, initially received more than 250 nominations. A panel of experts then reviewed each healthcare institution and picked 50 top entries based on measures such as architectural style, photogenic properties, landscaping and distinctiveness. More than 70,000 visitors to Soliant.com cast votes for the most beautiful hospital among those 50 entries.

“We are honored to be selected as one of America’s Most Beautiful Hospitals by visitors to Soliant’s website,” says Steven L. Strongwater, M.D., CEO, Stony Brook University Hospital. “These results illustrate that after five years of expanding and remodeling many areas of the hospital, we have made a meaningful impact on our healing environment which will greatly improve the facility for patients and visitors alike.”

“We were inspired to create this list by recent data that found that ‘happy hospitals make happy patients,’ said David Alexander, President of Soliant Health. “As a provider for healthcare professionals for hospitals, we recognize that staff morale and attention to patients’ needs are critical to patients’ happiness, but the survey showed that another factor in satisfaction is how the hospital actually looked.”

Under Soliant Health’s entry for Stony Brook University Hospital, the descriptor summary highlighting some reasons why Stony Brook ranked third in the top 20 list hits upon the diversity of the hospital structure and inside:

“Some great pieces of architecture are inspiring, even stirring. Occasionally they are also challenging, perplexing, and just plain fun. Such might be the case for patients or visitors wandering under the upper-stories of our second-runner-up, or upon traversing one of its several multi-level glass bridges between wings. Interiors are lit with smarts and sophistication.”
