J. Thomas Roland, MD, Director of Otology and Neurotology at NYU Medical Center will implant an improved cochlear device, the first to be done on the East Coast, on Wednesday, May 14 and will perform the same surgery on a second patient on May 15.

This newest implant, RP8, represents innovative developments in cochlear implant technology. With the potential for increased capacity, reduced power consumption and the ability to deliver sophisticated sound processing, this implant is designed to provide recipients with better outcomes than they can achieve with current cochlear implant technology.

When paired with a brand new speech processor, this system has the ability to process sound dramatically different from the devices that are currently on the market. It is also designed to operate on reduced power consumption, prolonging battery life and allowing recipients to live everyday life without interruption. This latest innovation from Cochlear is an investigational device, which is currently in limited clinical trials in three select centers across the United States and is not commercially available, as yet.

In the years since it's founding in 1984, the NYU Cochlear Implant Center has become one of the largest and most highly respected clinical and research centers in the world, having implanted over 900 cochlear and brain stem implants in children and adults.
