Newswise — Swarthmore College's sustainability efforts are featured in a new Web site, The Greening of Swarthmore. Highlights of the site, which launched this week at http://www.swarthmore.edu/sustainability/, include information about:"¢ the commitment to have 40 percent of the College's energy supply provided by wind power;"¢ the College's first "carbon-neutral" Alumni Weekend;"¢ the LEED-certified Science Center and sustainable design elements of two dormitories, Alice Paul Hall and David Kemp Hall.
Swarthmore has a long tradition of honoring the natural environment. Since the 1920s, the campus grounds have been recognized as The Scott Arboretum. The College also has a long-standing commitment to preserve the Crum Woods, which comprise nearly three-fifths of the College's land, as a natural wooded area. More recently, the College's efforts have extended beyond land management. Environmental issues are explored in Swarthmore's classrooms and labs. The community is also consciously reflecting on the sustainability of its purchasing, power, and construction choices. The College's commitment to sustainability is perhaps most clearly illustrated in the decision to include it as a priority in its ongoing long-term planning process.
