TABLE OF CONTENTS FOR MAY MEDIA PACKET

This month's media packet focuses on a supplement to the April Journal
of the American Dental Association (JADA). The supplement reports
extensively on a conference on tooth whiteners held last fall in North
Carolina. Industry experts, researchers and dentists gathered for "The
International Symposium on the Non-Restorative Treatment of Discolored
Teeth," held at the School of Dentistry of the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and supported by a grant from Colgate Oral
Pharmaceuticals. Journalists who wish to receive a complete copy of the
supplement may call the ADA's Media Relations staff at 312/440-2806. In
addition, the May JADA features news releases on treating gum disease
and TM disorders.

I. Attendees at The International Symposium on the Non-Restorative
Treatment of Discolored Teeth reported several significant findings and
developed a consensus report.

II. A survey revealed that nine of 10 dentists offer vital tooth
bleaching, one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures to lighten
the shade of teeth.

III. While dentist-dispensed, at-home tooth bleaching is the most common
tooth lightening procedure, dentists report on new in-office procedures,
including laser bleaching, that may be improvements on existing
bleaching methods

IV. Another researcher reports on continued evidence that strongly
suggests that dentist-dispensed nightguard tooth bleaching is safe and
effective.

V. Many consumers may turn to an over-the-counter whitening kit that may
not provide the results they are looking for.

VI. The May JADA reports on one study that shows how smoking hinders
healing after periodontal treatment and another study that found that
women are nearly 10 times as likely as men to receive surgery for
temporomandibular joint disorders.

VII. An ADA statement on antibiotic use in dentistry clarifies the
profession's role in combating the growing resistance to this popular
class of drugs.
