Nathan, MD, FACS; Fred Ampil, MD; Matthew L. Morgan, MEdCCC-SLP; Gloria Caldito, PhDPatients with T2 and T3 laryngeal carcinoma are frequently treated non-operatively with irradiation plus or minus chemotherapy. Posttreatment assessment is essential during follow-up. In this study, all patients had pretreatment paresis or fixation of the vocal cord. After therapy, return of vocal cord motion was associated with successful therapy. By contrast, patients who did not have return of vocal fold function had local-regional persistence or recurrence. This observation has important implications in the non-operative management of laryngeal cancer. PEDIATRIC EARS/OTOLOGY Visual-Motor Integration Skills of Prelingually Deaf Children: Implications for Pediatric Cochlear Implantation.David L. Horn, MD; Mary K. Fagan, PhD; Caitlin M. Dillon, PhD; David B. Pisoni, PhD; Richard T. Miyamoto, MDThe authors assess visual-motor integration (VI) skills of prelingually deaf (PLD) children before and after cochlear implantation. Overall visual-motor performance of PLD children was below that of normal hearing peers. Children implanted at an earlier age appeared to have VI skill enhancement. These studies do not prove a causal relationship but are consistent with the hypothesis that early sensory experience impacts information processing independent of sensory domain.

Bruhn, B.Btec; Eng Hooi Ooi, MBBS; Lor Wai Tan, PhD; Peter-John Wormald, MDLactoferrin is a peptide abundant in the airway. It is expressed by surface epithelia and secreted into mucus. It is considered part of the antigen-independent mechanism coping with infectious challenges. Nasal samples collected from 85 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis were compared with samples obtained from 18 controls. The level of mRNA expression was down regulated in patients relative to controls. Lactoferrin protein level in mucosa of patients was lower than controls. The authors hypothesize that a decrease in the synthesis and production of lactoferrin may predispose to chronic infection. Eosinophilic Bacterial Chronic Rhinosinusitis.Berrylin J.
