Teach Kids Compassion At Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, children are busy writing their wish lists, but the holidays also are the perfect time for parents to teach children to reflect on those who are less fortunate. That spark of compassion must be cultivated, says UAB child development expert Jerry Aldridge, Ph.D. "As the old saying goes: There's more caught than taught, and children generally learn compassion by watching their parents sacrifice for others. Parents should let their children see them visiting a homeless shelter, collecting can goods or making donations to a charity." Aldridge says that as the children grow older, parents should make sure that they continue talking to their children in a positive way about giving.
