Legislation designed to protect consumer confidentiality is pending in Congress and reflects the growing public concern that banks and other institutions could share customers' personal information without consent, says UAB computer scientist Warren Jones, Ph.D.

"We're talking about the intersection where technology collides with society." The same technology that makes marketing to individual consumers easy also makes selling personal information attractive, and lucrative, to some institutions. The public's concerns are real and loopholes that allow breeches of confidentiality need to be closed. "I think legal remedies are going to have to be built to protect privacy. The technology is requiring these issues to be addressed more specifically."
