WHAT:More than 1,000 pathologists will gather in Orlando, Fla. on October 13-16, 2013, for the annual meeting of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). This year’s scientific and educational program features world-renowned experts sharing the most up-to-date research on anatomic and clinical pathology, with a special focus on endocrine pathology, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, and growth disorders. Highlights include:

•The Metabolic Syndrome: the facts about this obesity-related disease and the pathologist’s role in patient management•Advances in tumor genomic profiling for lung, colon, skin, and thyroid cancers•New evidence-based recommendations for HER2 testing in breast cancer•More than 630 abstract and case study submissions, representing the largest number of posters ever presented at a CAP annual meeting

In addition, six Orlando-area high school students will be recognized for their award-winning science fair research projects.

WHY: Pathologists are diagnostic physicians and essential members of the patient’s health care team. They provide a diagnostic roadmap from disease identification to therapeutic intervention in both chronic and life-threatening illnesses. In fact, more than 70 percent of all decisions about diagnosis, treatment, hospital admission, and discharge rest on the pathologist’s report.
