Newswise — Breast cancer is expected to kill 240 New Mexican women this year alone and 1,360 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the state during 2013. However, New Mexicans are not willing to sit idly by. The University of New Mexico Cancer Center and UNM Hospital are hosting the annual breast cancer awareness football game, now called “Lobos Love Pink,” in an effort to combat this devastating disease in New Mexico.
Second to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. The frequency and severity of this cancer are among the reasons early detection is crucial. Many lives have and will be saved thanks to screening and regular mammograms. “Awareness is very important,” says Melanie Royce, MD, PhD. Dr. Royce is a University of New Mexico Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at the UNM School of Medicine. “Breast cancer has no symptoms in its early and most treatable stages. So, regular screenings help tremendously.”
The UNM Cancer Center and UNM Hospital host their “Lobos Love Pink” Football game to raise awareness of the disease and to demonstrate support for those brave women battling it. This year the football game will take place on Saturday, October 19. All those attending are encouraged to wear pink. The UNM Lobos and their coaching staff will also wear pink to celebrate the breast cancer survivors of New Mexico.
