Newswise — A collection of original artworks by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his studios, including nine signature stained glass lamps, is on display at Mayo Clinic Rochester.

The exhibit, "Tiffany at Mayo Clinic: a Celebration of Artistic Innovation" is expected to run until March 2006.

"Mayo Clinic believes that art plays a vital role in the healing process," said Sally Enders, coordinator of the Mayo Clinic art collection. "We are honored to present an exhibit of original artworks by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his studios, circa 1890-1930."

The Tiffany exhibit is in three locations on the Mayo Clinic Rochester campus: the Mathews Grand Lobby (street level) and Mayo Clinic Heritage Hall (adjoins the Mathews Grand Lobby), both in the Mayo Building, and in the subway level of the Siebens Building.

Visitors will be able to view pieces from the famed Tiffany designer that have been loaned or given to Mayo Clinic by generous benefactors.

The exhibit is designed for Mayo Clinic patients, staff and visitors. There is no charge to view the Tiffany pieces on display.

Louis Comfort Tiffany explained that his creations and designs were done in "the pursuit of beauty." His father, Charles Lewis Tiffany, was founder of the famous New York jewelry store, Tiffany & Co. However, Louis became a painter, interior decorator and innovator of design of glass objects and windows. Today, the creations of Louis Comfort Tiffany and his colleagues are prized by collectors and museums throughout the world.

The Mayo Clinic exhibition highlights the breadth of Tiffany's work and creativity, including vases, paintings, candlesticks, a desk set, and the lamps.

Each of the nine Tiffany signature stained glass lamps in the Mayo exhibit is unique. Each was handmade by an artisan, who took about one week to create the lamp. Each design is different, and a lamp can include several hundred pieces of glass. In the early 1900s, the lamps cost up to $1,000 each.

Mayo Clinic acknowledges with gratitude the benefactors who have given and loaned their Tiffany objects for this display: *Mr. and Mrs. Neely W. Keith *The Barbara Woodward Lips Estate*Mr. and Mrs. Don Messenger*Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Montgomery
