Newswise — November 5, 2012 - Warrendale, PA - The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has opened registration for the TMS 2013 Annual Meeting & Exhibition (TMS2013), the 142nd installment of the society’s annual conference for materials scientists and engineers. TMS2013 is scheduled for March 3-7 in San Antonio, Texas.

"It is at the core of what we do as a professional society and showcases the very best of what TMS has to offer its members - as well as the very best of what materials science and engineering has to offer the world."

A highlight of this year's conference will be Global R&D Trends – Implications for Material Sciences, a special session highlighting the achievements of Jeffrey Wadsworth, president and chief executive officer of Battelle Memorial Institute, who will accept the prestigious Acta Materialia Materials and Society Award at TMS2013.

Additional highlights of the 2013 conference will include:

  • Impurities in the Aluminum Supply Chain, a keynote session featuring invited presentations from leading industry experts that examine the role and outlook for impurities across the aluminum supply chain.
  • Materials Research Applied to National Needs, a symposium in honor of Professor Morris E. Fine of Northwestern University on his 95th birthday. Fine was one of the organizers of the first Materials Science Department in the United States.
  • REWAS 2013, a symposium on enabling materials resource sustainability, is designed to provide an interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary platform for metals and materials professionals and others to address sustainability in industry and society.
  • TMS 2013 Exhibition, a showcase of materials science and engineering products and services from around the world.
  • Continuing Education Courses, a selection of eight short courses, workshops, and tutorials on a variety of topics.
  • 2013 TMS-AIME Awards Banquet, where the 'stars' of the materials science and engineering field will be honored.

Nearly 3,800 technical papers will be presented at more than 330 technical sessions over five days in San Antonio. Presentations are grouped into the following technical tracks:

  • Advanced Characterization, Modeling, and Performance
  • High-Performance Materials
  • Light Metals: Aluminum, Magnesium, and Titanium
  • Materials and Society: Energy Technology, Policy, and Education
  • Materials Processing and Production
  • Nanoscale and Amorphous Materials
