Newswise — March 24, 2012 – Warrendale, PA –The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) marked the yearly change in executive leadership during the 141st Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida last week.

Aluminum researcher, industrialist, and professor Wolfgang Schneider was installed as the 56th president of TMS. A member of the Society for 18 years, he previously served as vice president. Schneider is the head of the research and development center of Hydro Aluminum Rolled Products Business in Bonn, Germany and is also a professor of metallurgy at the Technical University of Berlin. He said he looks forward to increasing the society’s focus on innovation and continuing education as the 2012 TMS president. “I am proud to serve the society in this position as an international member,” he said.

Elizabeth A. Holm, a distinguished member of the technical staff in the Materials and Process Modeling Department at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Sandia National Laboratory, was installed as vice president. Holm will take the helm as the 57th president of TMS at the 142nd Annual Meeting & Exhibition March 3-7, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas.

Over her 11 years at Sandia, Holm has worked on simulations to improve processes for lighting manufacture, microcircuit aging and reliability, and the processing of advanced-bearing steels.

Holm obtained her B.S.E in materials science and engineering from the University of Michigan, S.M. in ceramics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering and scientific computing from the University of Michigan.

Within TMS, she has served as chair of the Chemistry and Physics of Materials Committee, the Computer Simulation Committee, and the Structural Materials Division council. She is also active in the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division and Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division councils. Holm has received several professional honors and awards, is a fellow of ASM International, and serves on the National Materials Advisory Board of the U.S. National Academies. Holm has authored or co-authored more than 60 publications.

Robert W. Hyers, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and director of the Materials & Process Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts, was installed as financial planning officer.
